The city requested help rebuilding two bus shelters after repeated vandalism. We partnered with a local metal shop to design modular panels that could be replaced individually.
Design constraints
We needed panels that could be manufactured quickly and repaired without special tools. The team standardized bolt spacing and used marine-grade plywood to withstand weather.
Build process
Students cut the panels on the CNC router and used jigs to maintain square corners. A volunteer welding mentor assembled the steel frames.
What we learned
Modular parts reduce on-site labor. The city maintenance crew can now swap a damaged panel in under 15 minutes.
